Wildlife Sampling

  • Give a brief description of the project. It is a study of the migration patterns for the Idaho salmon and how the population is affected by the power producing dams.

  • How would you adapt it for your grade level and/or discipline area? Mrs. Young did a good job on explaining the migration of the salmon and also using her class to interact with. The power point appeared more graph looking and I would probably adapt by adding photo’s of salmon and various rivers. I think visual learning is huge. I feel by adding a visual touch, it will keep the students more engaged.

  • In other words, how would you change the lesson to fit your students’ needs? One way I would change the lesson plan is take the kids on a field trip to the river so they get out of the classroom. I feel this would create a true connection with the spawning of the salmon and the Idaho rivers.

Jigsaw Classroom

Get Jiggy

Get Jiggy in the classroom! What is the Jigsaw classroom? Technology has taken education to many different levels and it’s exciting to see all the new developments. Jigsaw classroom is a cooperative learning technique with three decades of positive educational outcomes. This year the Jigsaw classroom will be implemented into the physical education course which will emphasize teamwork, strategies, thinking, respect and unity. I like the collaborated effects in teaching a physical education course with the jigsaw approach because usually all students have different levels of ability. With the jigsaw strategy, teamwork is an essential tool for succeeding; everyone’s role is important in creating the project.

Here is one example of how I will implement the jigsaw classroom into my teachings. There will be 5 groups of 5 or 6 pending on our class size. A team leader will be chosen within each group. Each person must take one task and they will be considered the “expert person” for that task. Each “expert person” will work together to research, form ideas, and discuss main points for their task with the other experts from the various jigsaw groups. Once they have formulated their ideas and agenda, they will then return to the original jigsaw group and communicate their specific task and how it will benefit and work within the team; this becomes a question and answer scenario. Below are examples of 5 different tasks.

· This person will come up with a team workout schedule for the season

· Two offensive plays and two defensive plays

· Team colors/shirts and quote that represents the team on and off the field.

· One trick play and the two scenarios of when the trick play can be called.

· Rules

Advantage of this method: The advantages will encourage team building, each person takes a role in how to create the team, not only is each group sharing what they came up with but they also get to educate the group with their specialty. The jigsaw experience encourages listening, engagement and is a positive factor in learning respect and appreciation for others while trying to reach a common goal.

Disadvantage of the method: A disadvantage could be that it could get competitive. Also, some may not like what the other students in the group created so that could bring negative energy to the team.

However, I feel this will be a great way to learn, teach and implement classroom integrity. I believe the jigsaw classroom enhances the building of a team in a positive way, you will have to learn to deal with the negative tactics and/or either change the behavior or it will affect the outcome of the team’s results. I feel you have a choice in how you want to approach the jigsaw classroom.
